Südafrika - ein Land voller Gegensätze South Africa - a land full of contrasts

Hallo, mein Name ist Dana. Ich bin Mitglied des Kinder- und Jugendchores "Canzonetta". Wir haben oft Gastchöre bei uns zu Besuch. Im Winter 1999 besuchte uns ein Chor aus Südafrika: "Mpumalanga Jeugkoor / Youth choir". Mpumalanga ist auch eine Region in Südafrika östlich der Hauptstadt Pretoria. Pretoria ist rund 50 km von Johnnesburg entfernt. Sie ist die viertgrößte Stadt des Landes mit ca. 525 000 Einwohnern. Im Großraum schätzt man die Bevölkerung auf 1,1 Millionen. Die gesprochenen Sprachen sind Afrikaans, Englisch und verschiedene afrikanische Dialekte. Afrikaans wird vorwiegend von den Buren (Bauern) gesprochen, die vor allem aus den Niederlanden kamen. Es waren Siedler, die sich ab der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts im Hinterland von Kapstadt (gegründet 1652) niedergelassen haben. Die Währung der Südafrikaner ist Rand. Die Religionsgemeinschaften sind Christen und Animisten. Südafrika hat insgesamt eine Fläche von 1 221 037 km²: Die Einwohnerzahl beträgt 40 Millionen. Davon sind 76 % Schwarze, 13 % Weiße, 10 % Farbige und 3 % Asiaten. Die Bevölkerungsdichte liegt bei 33 Einwohnern/km². Nun zurück zum Chor: Wir, meine Familie und ich, haben uns sehr gefreut, da wir 4 Südafrikanerinnen aufnehmen konnten. Wir haben uns super verstanden. Annemie, Lizel, Bettine und Karen haben uns viel über Südafrika erzählt: über die Apartheid, die Townships, die Nationalparks, die tollen Landschaften (z. B. Drakensberge) und vieles mehr. Verständigt haben wir uns in Englisch, was für uns alle eine Fremdsprache war. Als die vier sich zwischenzeitlich auf Afrikaans, ihrer Muttersprache, unterhielten, stellten wir fest, dass wir einige Wörter verstehen konnten. Apartheid, zum Beispiel,  heißt auf Deutsch wie auch auf Afrikaans das gleiche.

In the winter of 1999 was a choir from South Africa here: "Mpumalanga Jeugkoor / Youth choir". Mpumalanga is also a region in South Africa east of the capital Pretoria. Pretoria is about 50 kilometres away from Johannesburg. It is the fourth largest city of the land with about 525,000 residents. In the Greater Pretoria the population is assessed at 1.1 millions. The spoken languages are Afrikaans, English and different African dialects. Afrikaans is mainly spoken by the "Buren" (farmers) who came from the Netherlands above all. They were Settlers who had maded their home at the hinterland of Kapstadt (founded in 1652) in the second half of the 17th century. The currency of the Southafricans is Rand. The confessions are Christians and Animists. South Africa has altogether a surface of 1,221,037 km². The total population amounts to 40 millions. 76 % are Blacks, 13 % are Whites, 10 % are coloured people and 3 % are Asians. The population density is at 33 inhabitants/km². Now back to the choir: My family and me, we were very glad because we could put up 4 Southafricans. We got along with each other very well. Annemie, Lizel, Bettine and Karen have told us many things about the "Apartheid", the townships, the nationalparks, the magnificent countryside (e. g. Drakensberge) and more. We spoke English with each other. That was for all of us a foreign language. When the 4 girls spoke Afrikaans meanwhile, we noticed that we could understand some words. Apartheid, for example, is in German the same word like in Afrikaans.
